Iron Maiden – the pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal

On Christmas morning in 1975, the time had come: bassist Steve Harris founded the band Iron Maiden in Leyton, East London. To this day, the group is regarded as one of the most successful and enduring heavy metal bands of all time. Over 85 million albums sold and a discography spanning five decades speak for themselves. This group has shaped metal like no other.

But what makes the guys so special? Unlike many bands of their era, Iron Maiden didn’t rely solely on raw energy from the very beginning. With their twin-guitar sound, they created an epic musical complexity, underlined by Bruce Dickinson’s tenor voice and Steve Harris’ bass playing. This is how the band developed their unmistakable sound, which has made them pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal to this day.

And there is another special feature that sets Iron Maiden apart: Edward the Head, better known as Eddie. The mascot has accompanied the band since the early 80s and has been inseparably linked with them ever since. For fans, this is a true blessing, as Eddie joins the band at every concert and on every tour with his unique appearance. His various roles on the covers of albums and singles have become just as iconic as the band itself.

Who is Eddie and why does he feature so heavily on the merch?

Everyone knows and loves him: We’re talking, of course, about that face whose grimace adorns almost every Iron Maiden T-shirt and album cover. The iconic mascot of the British band was created by graphic artist Derek Riggs in the early 80s and first appeared on the cover of the single Running Free.

The musicians were initially sceptical until Riggs added the skull’s distinctive wild hairstyle.

Since then, the gnarled zombie has accompanied the band on every tour and at every concert. Eddie is incredibly versatile, appearing as a punk, soldier, mummy, cyborg and much more.
