It’s a truth universally known that the right outfit can make the world of difference. Slayer are icons in the metal scene, having dominated their own space in the genre for nearly four decades. The band are best known for merging their musical persona with their band persona – both being brash, controversial, challenging and defiant.

The band were known for certain elements in their music, elements which quickly inspired other acts and remain a staple in the heavy and black metal scenes. Fast tremolo picking, elaborate guitar solos, double bass drumming, and piercing, shouting vocals. The band also made a name for themselves very early on into their career with their shocking and provocative lyrics and album art. Frequently revolving around topics like death, gore, Satan, hell, warfare and serial killers – you know, the same sort of thing ABBA sing about – Slayer remained unapologetic throughout their entire reign, even in the face of public controversy.

Album bans, delays, lawsuits, and strong criticism from religious groups and the general public became part and parcel of the Slayer experience, but it never deterred the fans. Despite all the controversies and criticism, Slayer are one of the most successful thrash metal groups in history, having won two GRAMMY awards and selling over 20 million records worldwide. After nearly forty years of recording and performing, Slayer embarked on their farewell tour in 2018 and had their last show at The Forum in Los Angeles in 2019.
