American Gothic shows the Smashing Pumpkins from their best side: Corgans songwriting complicated and sinsible, the arrangements transparent and delicate and the songs are emotionally close to the heart.

by Oliver Kube (04.03.2008) The new, 17-minute long EP of the Smashing Pumpkins consists of four songs that had been written for the reunion album but after all didn't fit on "Zeitgeist". No wonder: they are clearly mellower and more lovely than the loud, storming material of that album. "Pox" and the dreamy "Sunkissed" very positively remind me of the calmer, spherical side that the Chicago-based band once introduced with "Mellon collie and the infinite sadness" (1995). Sparse guitars and soft, electronic sound walls encounter the slightly weird, melancholic vocals of Billy Corgan. With "Again, again, again (the crux)", the pace is increased a bit but in terms of arrangements sticks to the style of the rest of the disc. The jewel of the song quartet is "The rose march", a masterpiece and one of the best creations of the bare-headed eccentric, ever: great lyrics, refined with a beautiful melody and the perfect timing of drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin short before the end. That's how we love the Pumpkins.
