After the huge success of 'Images And Words', 'Dream Theater' felt an urgent need to work on new material, so they went back into the studio in May 1994. John Purdell and Duane Baron produced and mixed the album. The cover design was created by the band itself and contains references to the lyrics of the album.
"Awake" hit number 32 on the Billboard Top 200. It is the last album with keyboardist Kevin Moore, who announced his exit from the band during the recording and was finally replaced by Derek Sherinian. 'Lie', 'Caught In A Web' and 'The Silent Man' were released as singles.
