by Sonja Angerer (20.01.06) The first live-dvd of the misanthropic doom-quartet from Brooklyn concentrates on material recorded on their 1999 tour, especially on the Bizarre-Festival of that year. The songs are a best-of choice from the records through to “October rust“ (1996): “Christian women“, “My girl friend's girl friend“ and “Love you to death“ were recorded as well as “Black #1“ plus a dozen of other songs, often in medley format. All this is added by plenty of bonus material such as long and not always tasteful behind the scenes excerpts of the life on tour, an exclusive interview, biographies of all four musicians and a picture gallery. By the aid of the Dolby 5.1 sound mix, the sonic content is excellent and also musically, Peter Steele and his fellows are at their very best. For newcomers, “Symphonie for the devil“ is a tasty T.O.N. compendium, fans won't get by this dvd, anyway. Nevertheless, for the latter, the extras could have been a bit more loving.
