Synthie Pop

The pioneers of synth pop were Kraftwerk, for example. They turned electronic sounds into catchy songs and created a new genre. Their successors took up the idea and mixed the synthetic sounds with rock, pop and good danceable music. The result was bands like Visage, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys or Soft Cell. The outfits of the bands and their performances also adapted to the music. They were partly futuristic in appearance and moved in a reserved and controlled way. Especially the New Romantis of the black scene loved synth pop and celebrated bands like Yazoo, Ultravox and Gary Newman. OMD and New Order, the "successor band" to the post-punk formation Joy Division, also turned to synth pop to some extent.

Later, synth pop developed into genres like "Italo Disco" with bands like Gazebo or "Euro Dico" with bands like C.C. Catch or Bad Boys Blue. Even later, it became future pop, electroclash or techno trance.

Synth pop was eclipsed by techno at some point in the 90s and almost completely disappeared from the black scene. However, a few bands like Light Asylum or De/Vision are still active today and perform at festivals. Other bands have clearly evolved and expanded their repertoire, such as Depeche Mode.
