Literature, films, art and music in futuristic retro style are one side of steampunk culture. The other side consists of fantastic outfits that, together with decorations, street performers and rides, make up the steampunk markets and steampunk parties. But what kind of clothing does one wear as a steampunk?
In principle, there are no rules when it comes to steampunk clothing. However, you can orientate yourself on the classic clothing patterns of times gone by. So the ladies wear dresses, mainly those based on the Victorian era. The gentlemen help themselves to working-class clothes or come tastefully in a suit with waistcoat. Top hats for HIM and hats for HER round off the outfit. But there is one thing you must not forget about steampunk: Old is always combined with new. But only with new things that were new at the time. Confused? Yes, steampunk clothing is just something special. It's actually quite simple. You take the clothing and give it the finishing touch with details made of leather, brass, copper and symbols. Gears always work, but more elaborate mechanical constructions are also welcome.
Build your steampunk outfit!
Steampunks are hobbyists who create their individual outfits. They think of past adventures, a dash of romance, fantasy and retro charm. But of course everything is allowed today. Even women are allowed to slip into steampunk trousers and men have been seen in steampunk dresses. But what is the order of the day with goths is the exception with steampunk.
Not every steampunk has time to re-sew or detail their clothing. Still, the Steampunk Festival doesn't have to be crossed off the calendar then, because here with us you can find great Steampunk clothing that may not be as flashy as the fantastic do-it-yourself designs, but is enough for a great trip into the future of the past. The cuts and fabrics in the Steampunk Shop are also a great basis for your own designs and ideas. The advantage: our steampunk clothes are suitable for everyday use. Classic cuts, blouses, dresses, shirts, waistcoats, skirts and accessories can be worn not only at a steampunk event, but also at work or in your free time. Combine them with our gothic clothes and bring a little dark nostalgia into play. There are no limits to what you can wear.
Colours and stylistic devices for steampunk clothing
Whoever is committed to pure steampunk should pay attention to brown tones when choosing clothes. These are reminiscent of copper, rust, metal and bronze. In combination, colours such as olive green, rust red and white or beige go well. Components of pirate fashion also go well with steampunk. If you like it a little darker, choose the black versions of steampunk clothing and combine them with steampunk and gothic elements. Some style elements can be found in both areas, for example lacing, corsets, ruffles, flounces, top hats and hair ornaments. Feathers on the festive fascinator can also be seen on steampunks and goths.
Steampunk clothing for ladies
The vast majority of steampunk ladies wear dresses or skirts. Of course, there are always steampunk adventurers in smart trousers, but the dress with a bodice is the absolute favourite. Steampunk dresses are reminiscent of the dresses of the Victorian era. They are sweeping and pompous and not infrequently full of frills and romantic elements. Steampunk dresses come in all lengths. They are often cut asymmetrically and the lady shows leg in the front, while the ruffles reach down to the floor in the back. The skirts are gathered with belt elements or buttons.
Steampunk clothing for men
When it comes to steampunk clothing, men like to go for classic trousers with leather elements and exposed pockets for imaginary or actual tools. Trousers with flared thighs and narrow calves are also popular. Man" wears steampunk boots with them - preferably decorated himself or sprayed with gold paint. But that would be too bad with the great boots in the EMP shop. Here too, the gloomy steampunks are more oriented towards gothic fashion with romantic patterns and fabrics such as jacquard or brocade. The waistcoat is not to be missed and the top also has romantic details such as ruffles or decorative buttons.
Steampunk accessories
Trousers, walking stick, decorated hat, pocket square, diving goggles with gears: These are just a few accessories for men. But there are no limits to the imagination. The retro pistol in a leather holster or the man's collar are also allowed. The ladies go all out for steampunk jewellery and steampunk handbags. Accessories such as tights printed with gears also set accents. The headdress for the braided hairstyle is particularly eye-catching. It can consist of individual barrettes, a feather-trimmed fascinator or a decorated mini hat.
