Other countries, other Christmas traditions

In Austria, things can sometimes get pretty spooky at Christmas. Father Christmas does not come alone, but has a demonic accomplice in tow: the Krampus. According to popular belief, this scary figure with big horns and shaggy fur haunts all children who have not been good. In the course of time, however, the image of the Krampus has changed, and the sinister creature now enjoys a large fan base, and many Krampus parades with elaborate costumes take place throughout Austria, particularly in December.

In Germany, things don't get spooky at Christmas, but they do get a little bizarre: some Christmas trees have a cucumber hanging on them alongside glittering baubles and lots of tinsel. The tradition of the Christmas cucumber probably comes from the 20th century. Poor families with lots of offspring could not afford a present for every child. Therefore, only the child who first discovered the cucumber hidden in the Christmas tree received a little something. Even today, the cucumber is a nice reminder that we should be grateful for our gifts - even if once again there was only a pair of socks.

In Norway, calling Christmas the "most magical time of the year" takes on a whole new meaning: according to Norwegian folklore, Christmas Eve is the time of year when witches and ghosts get up to mischief.
