Trivium is a band with many faces, which knows how to combine elements of heavy metal, metalcore and thrash metal like no other. For a band that tends in so many different directions, it is particularly remarkable to be able to look back on more than 20 years of band history.
From talent competition to exceptional talents
Unlike other band stories, Trivium's doesn't start in a backyard rehearsal room, but in a middle-class talent competition: Trivium founding members Brad Lewter, Brent Young, Matthew Heafy and Travis Smith met for the first time at Lake Brantley High School in 1999. After the quartet managed to get a few gigs at parties, singer Brad Lewter decided to leave the band and Heafy took over the role of lead singer.
By the way, the name of the band comes from Latin: Trivium is a term that describes the three linguistic subjects of the seven liberal arts. These include grammar, dialect and rhetoric. The band chose the name because it stands for openness and different styles, which underlines the musical aesthetics of the Americans. In 2003 the time had come and the band made their first high-quality demo recordings.
Through this, the record label Lifeforce became aware of the band, which immediately offered Trivium a contract and sent the guys to the recording studio to record "Ember to Inferno" (2003). The debut album received almost exclusively positive reviews, so that a new disc was not long in coming. Together with Roadrunner Records, Trivium released "Ascendancy" in March 2005. Shortly afterwards, Trivium went back into the studio to record "The Crusade" (2006).
The album is characterized above all by Heafy's softer vocal style, which did not exactly trigger enthusiasm among fans of the band. Whereas Heafy had focused on growls and screams on previous albums, there is also a lot of clear vocals to be heard in "The Crusade".
The band took the critics to heart and returned to their thrashy style in 2008 with "Shogun". In the summer of 2011, fans could look forward to another Trivium album, "In Waves", with which the band clearly showed that they had developed in terms of songwriting and did not shy away from more complex pieces. Trivium also proved sophistication in terms of composition and lyrics with their 2013 masterpiece "Vengeance Falls", which even reached chart placements in the USA, the U.K., Japan and various European countries.
This was followed by two more albums, "Silence in the Snow" (2015) and "The Sin and the Sentence" (2017), with which Trivium established themselves in the international music scene. Despite some member changes over the years and various experimental phases, Trivium remained true to their style and created not only some rousing albums, but also a loyal fanbase.
"What the Dead Men Say"
After three years, there are finally new Trivium songs on your ears again! The new work is called: "What the Dead Men Say". According to singer Matthew Heafy, the album embodies everything Trivium stands for. For him, the album combines the Trivium sound of the future, present and past. A small foretaste of the album was already given by the single "Catastrophist". Catchy guitar passages, a powerful beat and an emotional chorus give the almost seven-minute song a dramatic atmosphere that makes you want more.
