So how did this amazing world of magic come to life? It all began in 1997, when author Joanne K. Rowling published the first book in the Harry Potter series (Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone), and what started out as a children’s book quickly gained a far larger fan base. How Harry’s story began

Harry Potter didn’t have an easy childhood. Both his parents, Lily and James, died when he was still a baby. He went to live with his aunt Petunia, her heavily overweight husband Vernon and their spoiled-rotten son Dudley. These three were far from loving. After all, Harry’s bedroom was in the closet under the stairs. Speaking of closets, have you got your Harry Potter t-shirt or cardigan with your House’s emblem on it yet?

When Harry was 11, he received a letter from Hogwarts, which marked the beginning of a turning point in his life. The letter invited the young wizard to visit Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, changing everything for Harry. He wasn’t even aware that he was a wizard at that point!

Harry finally learned how his parents Lily and James were killed by Lord Voldemort, and how he had survived because his mother sacrificed herself for him. The Killing Curse “Avada Kedavra” rebounded and is the reason why Harry bears a scar in the shape of a lightning bolt on his forehead, a sign that made him known throughout the wizarding world as the boy who survived the Dark Lord. Harry’s journey to Hogwarts

On the train journey to Hogwarts, Harry met Ron - a fellow trainee wizard he liked to play a game of Wizard’s Chess with, as well as Hermione too. Despite being so far away from his old life, Harry was unable to shake off the tragic memories of his parents’ death.

Lord Voldemort’s powers were heavily weakened after he tried to kill Harry, and for many years he relied on the loyal Death Eaters to give him back his strength. The Dark Lord’s goal? To increase his powers and kill Harry Potter once and for all.

In order to escape death, Harry got a helping hand from his friends Ron and Hermione to hunt down and kill Voldemort. Parts of his soul were locked away in objects and creatures, called horcruxes. All Harry, Ron and Hermione needed to do is find and destroy them. Only real bookworms and film fanatics will know whether or not the battle against the dark forces was a success.

The world of Harry Potter merchandise continues to grow>

When the very last film of the series hit the big screens, fans across the world were getting ready to put down their wands. Luckily J.K. Rowling had a backup of magical supplies, and published her theatre piece “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” in 2016, which is also available from the EMP Harry Potter Shop.
