In 1997, the world was introduced to a wizard. His name was Harry Potter and he would go on to cast a spell on the whole world, enchanting the old and young alike across seven books, eight films and multiple spin-off ventures.
Legend has it that J.K. Rowling wrote her early Harry Potter books in a café, while she was a single mum struggling to make ends meet. Even with the gift of magic, Rowling couldn’t have predicted what was to become of her young hero, The Boy Who Lived.
Throughout the seven books, Harry Potter learns he is a wizard, escapes his unloving aunt, uncle and cousin and realises that his parents were murdered by the most-evil wizard to have lived, Lord Voldermort. Sound intense? Luckily, as Dumbledore, the headmaster of magical school Hogwarts tells him, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.
The magic might have bewitched us, but it was the humanity in Harry Potter that cemented its place in our hearts. He makes lifelong friends in Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, falls in love and helps save the world a few dozen times.
What started out as a children’s book quickly gained a far bigger fan base and, by the time the final film was released, the total value of the Harry Potter franchise was estimated at over $25 billion - making it one of the highest-grossing franchises of all time.
