Ubisoft’s most successful franchise only really got going during later releases, although the release of the first Assassin’s Creed in 2007 already had gamers all over the world spellbound. Assassin’s Creed depicts the story of the eternal battle between the Assassins and the Templars, which has been fought for centuries.
The player can step into their ancestors’ shoes through the Animus, a type of time machine, allowing them to live through every moment with them. Thanks to the historically accurate gaming world, real events and famous personalities from the history books are brought to life for the fictitious Assassin’s Creed story.
For instance, in part three, you live through the American civil war and in the fifth part ‘Unity’ you are transported to the French Revolution. Whatever the setting, you are guaranteed an exciting game where the player, in disguise, stealthily goes in for the kill. You are guaranteed a hard battle but the Assassins have a whole array of weapons to defend themselves.
Assassins travelling through time
The success of Assassin’s Creed began in 2007 with part one, which was well known for its realistic and detailed graphics. There we learn about the battle between the Assassins and Templars through the eyes of the Assassin Altair, who is living during the third crusade in the Holy Land.
Historical figures such as Richard I and Robert de Sabl appear throughout the main storyline. The game is particularly well known for its accurate depiction of cities in the Holy Land, including Jerusalem and Damascus.
The second part was released in 2009 and follows the story of the master Assassin Ezio during the Italian Renaissance, who also appears in the spin-offs ‘Brotherhood’ and ‘Revelations’, Here we meet figures such as Da Vinci and Medici and you get to experience Venice and Florence. The Ezio trilogy helped the series become so successful as it merges an interesting storyline with the infinite possibilities of the gaming world.
After the third series spin-off, which was set at the time of the American civil war, numerous new scenes have followed. ‘Black Flag’ is a pirate adventure set in the Caribbean, ‘Unity’ is played out during the French revolution and in ‘Syndicate’ the Assassins battle it out in Victorian London.
Assassin’s Creed Merchandise
Due to the success of the Assassin’s Creed range on PC and console, in 2016 it slowly ventured its way into novels and comics, ultimately ending up at the cinema. Breaking onto the cinema screens was quite an achievement, given that the project was repeatedly shelved since 2011 and was rewritten almost every year.
With Michael Fassbender in the lead role, the Assassins broke onto the big screen at the end of 2016. The cinema experience goes hand in hand with playing the game and depicts characteristic story lines including time travel on the Animus to the Spanish inquisition.
