When drummer Tre Cool joined Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt – lifelong friends, punks at heart and aspiring musicians – it marked the dawn of a new day, a Green Day.

After trialling their sound and releasing early works like "1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours", they earned their stripes on the underground scene and started to gain attention with their second album, "Kerplunk". This got them in the doors of the major labels and led to one of the best-selling pop-punk albums in history, "Dookie". More than 25 million copies of Dookie have been sold and the album won the band their first career Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance.

Billie and the boys rode the wave of punk’s resurgence throughout the 90s with follow-up albums "Insomniac" (1995), "Nimrod" (1997) and "Warning" (2000). Though their success was evident, Green Day never quite reached the success of Dookie again. Until…

"American Idiot". After a short hiatus, Green Day re-entered the rock arena with a career-best with 2004’s "American Idiot". Proving that the best art can come from the worst of times, the concerns of the Iraq War, a George Bush presidency and the decline of American culture inspired the boys to tackle everything from mass media manipulation, homophobia, celebrity culture and corruption with radio-ready hooks and punk riffs.

Over 12 million copies of American Idiot have been sold worldwide, and in 2005 Green Day received a second Grammy award but this time for Best Rock Album. Singles like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends" have become all-time greats in pop-punk canon.

"American Idiot" proved to be anything but dumb as Green Day's popularity soared for both long-time fans and a whole new generation. Keeping the momentum going, follow up albums like "21st Century Breakdown" and the album trilogy "¡Uno! , ¡Dos! , And ¡Tré!" were critical and commercial smashes.

With five Grammy awards and over 85 million records sold, Green Day are simply one of the most successful punk rock bands of all time – with iconic looks, album covers and music videos to boot. With socially critical lyrics, musical innovation and an anarchic attitude, Green Day conquered the mainstream in the early 90s. At the same time, the band was also a mouthpiece for many young American people who were unsettled by the political situation under President George W. Bush in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Green Day - From underground to breakthrough

But let's start from the beginning: like most bands, Green Day formed by a happy accident. Billie Joe Armstrong met future bassist Mike Dirnt when they were still in primary schools in Crockett, California. The two were immediately good friends and saw eye to eye, especially when it came to music. Both Armstrong and Dirnt were enthusiastic about punk bands like the "Ramones" or the "Dead Kennedys" as teenagers.

Together, the two formed their first band called "Sweet Children" at the age of 14 with drummer Sean Hughes. With this band project, the trio was also quite successful, especially in the San Francisco Bay area, the three of them had several live performances.

A few years later, in 1989 to be precise, drummer Hughes was replaced by Al Sobrante and the band recorded their first album "39/Smooth" under the name "Green Day", which was released by the local record label Lookout Records.

In 1991 Green Day were signed to Lookout Records and there was another change within the band, which was to be the last: drummer Sobrante was replaced by Tre Cool, who still sets the pace for the band and has been involved in various band projects since he was twelve years old. In the same year, Green Day also released "1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours", a collection of their musical works.

The fan community of Green Day grew quickly, one could almost speak of a small Green Day cult that formed during this time, as most of them were really convinced hardcore fans who supported the band unconditionally. From a music-historical point of view, too, Green Day formed at a conceivably favourable time: when Green Day released their first works, punk was experiencing a new upswing, especially in California, which contributed decisively to the trio's success.

With their next album Kerlpunk, Green Day achieved great success in the underground scene, which also drew the attention of larger record labels to the band. In cooperation with Reprise Records, "Dookie" was finally released in 1994, with which Green Day went overnight from an underground punk band to a commercially successful band that also excited the mainstream: the band received a Grammy Award for " Best Alternative Music Performance" and the album sold over 15 million copies.

American Idiot

Not surprisingly, then, further releases were not long in coming: their next albums, Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997) and Warning (2000), however, failed to match the commercial success of Dookie. After a four-year break, however, Green Day came back stronger than ever: with "American Idiot", the three created an album full of political relevance that gave expression to the fears and concerns of the American population. It was mainly about manipulation by mass media, homophobia, mass hysteria and criticism of the political system.

The album sold over 12 million copies and won the Grammy Award "Best Rock Album" in 2005. The single "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" even won the Grammy Award in the category "Record of the Year" in 2006. The following album "21st Century Breakdown", released in 2009, was also praised by critics, celebrated by fans and cleared another Grammy Award for the category "Best Rock Album". In 2012, Green Day released the album trilogy "¡Uno!", "¡Dos!", and "¡Tré!", as well as the album "Revolution Radio" (2016), on which they return to their punk beginnings. As usual, it deals with social and political topics.

Father of All Motherfuckers

After four years of waiting, fans of the trio can finally enjoy new music: on 19 September 2019, Green Day released their new song "Father of All Motherfuckers" from the album of the same name, which will be released on 07 February 2020 by Reprise / Warner Records. At 26 minutes long, the album's brevity is reminiscent of previous Green Day releases such as "Dookie."

Thematically, it is not supposed to be directly about political grievances - unlike American Idiot - but about the problems that many people have to live with every day, be it a generally prevailing depression or chaotic social conditions. The big world tour, during which Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool will visit 42 cities in the USA, Russia, Asia and Europe, also promises to be a great success.
