They hail from Down Under and they’ve got directions for the Highway to Hell, but there’s nothing sinful about loving AC/DC.

Formed in Sydney in 1973 by Glasgow-born brothers Malcolm and Angus Young, and given added charge by the arrival of a fellow Scottish immigrant Bon Scott in 1974, AC/DC were switched on and ready to set pulses racing. There are many myths about where the band got the name AC/DC, with some alluding to the fact that AC/DC was commonly used slang for bisexuality. Other theories had it connected to devil worship. The truth? The truth is so much more rock’n’roll than sex or Satan – the name AC/DC was taken from a sewing machine. The plug-in instructions in Malcolm and Angus Young’s sisters sewing machine inspired them to want a sound that was equally as electric, jolting and full of raw power.

AC/DC were hits in Australia to begin with – where real fans know them as Acca Dacca – but before long, Acca Dacca weren’t Australia’s little secret. With their first globally distributed album, 'High Voltage', the group found worldwide success… followed by tragedy. Bon Scott passed away in 1980. The band, with the blessing of Scott’s family, pushed on to create a legacy that would have all members – including new vocalist Brian Johnson – become certified rock gods. Across their 16 studio albums, the band have sold more than 200 million records worldwide.

Several of their albums and singles are also iconic landmarks in rock. Back in Black, released in 1980, is considered one of the best-selling albums of all time – across any genre.

In their later years, the band showed no signs of slowing. Their Black Ice and Rock or Bust albums proved the legendary rockers still had twice the energy of any schoolboy – the uniform often worn by Angus Young. In 2014, Malcolm Young had to end his career due to a stroke.

A rock god who left it all in his work, Malcolm Young passed away on 18th November 2017, aged 64.

A music legend never truly dies – not when the opening riffs of so many of his iconic songs still inspire electricity unmatched by any band that’s come since – so, in the words of the band, Let There Be Rock. And let there be rock merchandise, right here at EMP.
