"We’ll let this be a Stark warning – a Tony Stark warning – you’ll want to assemble yourself to get your hands on our Iron Man merchandise before someone else beats you to it.
Long before Robert Downey Jr stepped up to the plate – and into the Iron plates - Iron Man was an icon. One of Marvel’s pivotal comic book creations, Iron Man was co-created by writer and editor Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck and Jack Kirby. The character made his first appearance in Tales of Suspense #39 back in 1963 and proved to be immensely popular, receiving his own title eponymous magazine in 1968. It was back in 1963 that Iron Man first stood side by side with the likes of Thor, Ant-Man and the Hulk in the earliest version of The Avengers.
But before we revisit that particular chapter, let’s revisit the creation of Stark enterprises – and the enterprise that would become Iron Man. For Iron Man was a different sort of hero when he came along and can be considered a pioneer in introducing nuance and depth to the two-dimensional world of comic book heroes.
Iron Man aka Tony Stark did the unthinkable – he made a billionaire likeable. Stark was written as a wealthy American capitalist, playboy, philanthropist, inventor and scientist. Before Stark, heroes were hearty. They were all-American, moral, pure. When the billionaire Stark is injured by captors who attempt to force him to build a weapon of mass destruction, he instead creates a mechanized suit of armour to save his life and escape captivity. Later, Stark develops his suit, adding weapons and other technological devices he designed through his company, Stark Industries. He uses the suit and successive versions to protect the world as Iron Man. Sometimes, greed really can be good.
To begin with, Iron Man represented something significant to the times – he was a vehicle to explore the Cold War, and the idea of American exceptionalism, the arms race and the fight against communism.
Though the character was always popular for readers of Marvel, he re-emerged as a major player in the zeitgeist after Robert Downey Jr took on the role in Iron Man in 2008. Unbeknownst to us back then, Iron Man the movie was the very first spark in what would become the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and the Avengers saga.
